Summary of John’s GSL Report for the 2023-2024 AGM 

As we reflect on the past year, it’s essential to acknowledge the unwavering commitment of every section leader. Their hard work over the past few years has been instrumental in rebuilding our group and maintaining our achievements. 

A special thanks goes to the 61st Exec committee, whose exceptional efforts have guided us through the challenges of running a successful scout group. Vanessa, Karen, and Mick deserve particular recognition for their leadership and dedication over the past year. 

Our section reports only scratch the surface of the exciting activities provided to our members. Each section has organized multiple overnight camps and residentials, both independently and in collaboration with other sections. 

  • Beaver Section: Our Beavers have taken their first steps in scouting with enthusiasm, tackling tough challenges while having lots of fun. 
  • Cub Section: The Cubs have added a new dimension to their scouting journey, focusing on learning and discovery through varied meeting content. 
  • Air Scout Section: Despite the economic challenges and cuts affecting the RAF and other establishments, our Air Scouts have continued to develop their skills and knowledge, gaining more autonomy. Securing flying experiences remains difficult, but we are committed to finding solutions. 
  • Atlas Explorers: Part of the 61st family, Atlas Explorers have increased their numbers and provided great support across all sections. They are looking for adventurous leaders to help expand their activities—please see Mowgli if interested. 

Last year, we reported significant investments in the maintenance of the Scout Hall and our application for a grant to replace it. We are thrilled to announce that we were awarded a full grant to demolish and replace the hall. Although we faced a four-week delay, we successfully transitioned to a temporary base at The Hub Town End Bentley, thanks to a last-minute rescue by St Peter’s Church. Special thanks to Dave Berry for arranging the venue. 

The new building process is massive, and without Mick, Karen, and Vanessa, we wouldn’t be in this fantastic position. We look forward to reporting on the build and holding our next AGM in a brand-new building. 

Our minibus has been well-used by all sections, with more bookings through 2023-24. Thank you to Michael for maintaining the vehicle and to those who have looked after it at their home addresses.

We celebrated our 70th Birthday with a group activity at Aeroventure, where all sections participated, and a fantastic cake made by Tash. We ended the year with Scoutmas at Squirrel Wood, a festive weekend filled with snow (supplied by the special leader elves), Santa, and seasonal fare. A massive thanks to Dragon for making this magical event a reality. 

I am incredibly proud to be part of the 61st. The year 2023/24 has seen some of the best scouting in the country, and with our new building on the way and many activities planned for 2024/25, the future looks even brighter.
